Congratulations to Glasgow Middle School teacher Nathalie Roy, who has been selected as a 2024 Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship Cohort member through National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions. Roy is one of 35 educators from the United States and Canada who will embark on international expeditions, including destinations such as Antarctica, the Galápagos, Patagonia, Alaska, the Arctic and beyond. The Fellows will travel aboard Lindblad Expeditions, National Geographic`s state-of-the-art expedition vessels, to enhance their geographic knowledge with interactive, field-based experiences they will bring back to their classrooms, communities and professional networks. Fellows take on a two-year commitment to support National Geographic`s education initiatives.

Congratulations to Scotlandville Magnet High School senior cadets Makeriah Harris (LSU) and Layden Jack (University of New Orleans) for earning four-year, full-tuition scholarships from the U.S. Army Cadet Command Senior ROTC Program National Scholarships for the 2024 fall semester. The students were awarded the scholarships by Brig. Gen. Amanda Azubuike, of U.S. Army Cadet Command, during a recognition ceremony in front of family and JROTC instructors on April 6 at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Special thanks to Sgt. Maj. Yolanda Wade, the New Orleans recruiting and operations officer, and the Scotlandville JROTC cadre for their excellent work in coordinating and securing scholarships for our students.

Kylie Altier, of McKinley Elementary School, has received a grant from the Academic Distinction Fund for her new reading initiative, "Read with Kylie." The free initiative includes physical kits for students to check out and a website where parents can teach their children the foundational skills of reading. Altier, the 2024 Louisiana Teacher of the Year, walks through every step of a 20-minute low-prep, high-impact nightly home routine that has helped her succeed in her classroom for 11 years and with her own 4-year-old!

It was a close game between Westdale and Woodlawn Middle, with Westdale edging out a 5-4 victory in the end at Oak Villa Park. Braxton Mahan emerged as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the game due to his excellent performance on the mound and some key hits. Congratulations to both teams for their hard work and dedication throughout this first season of middle school baseball. #WeAreEBR
