CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

There shall be no corporal punishment in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.  The School Board does not authorize or condone the use of corporal punishment as a means of maintaining order in the schools.  However, it is recognized that reasonable use of force and restraint may be necessary to stop a disturbance threatening physical injury to others, to obtain possession of dangerous or contraband objects from students, for the purpose of self-defense, for the protection of persons or property, or similar actions.

While corporal punishment is generally associated with spanking or paddling, the intentional infliction of pain by other means is also prohibited.  Taping a student’s mouth shut or otherwise restricting his or her airway in any manner is prohibited.
