Short hour positions of 3-4 hours per day are available in school cafeterias and kitchens around the parish. You can be trained for a variety of job duties, such as preparing and serving food or operating a computer at meal service. You can earn extra money while your children are in school. Starting pay is $10.50 per hour. Apply in the School Food Service office located next to the BREC Center at 3000 North Sherwood Forest Drive 70814.
The Louisiana Child Nutrition Training Program
In 1984, the Louisiana Department of Education funded the development of a comprehensive training program for food service workers. In 1996-97, through a USDA Team Nutrition Grant, all units were viewed and revised as needed. The training program consists of three phases (Phase I, Phase II and Phase III).
The East Baton Rouge Parish Child Nutrition Program participates in a training program. Yvette Griffin, CNP Education Training Manager, conducts the training program. Full-time child nutrition employees who qualify for the Manager’s Training Program must participate in Phase I, Phase II and Phase III training. Phase I includes 20 units (script, videotapes), which were developed as part of these projects. Thirteen additional units, Culinary Techniques for Healthy School Meals (script and videotapes) dealing with food production are also included in the Phase I.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Child Nutrition Program’s records and reports are also taught during the Phase I training. After completion of Phase I training, each student must take a final examination at the local level and pass with a score of 80 or above before being registered to participate in the state Phase I testing.
Phase II of the Manager Training Program consists of twenty-two units that describe the additional responsibilities of the manager. These units include printed materials only. Titles of the Phase II units for the Manager Certification Program are as follows:
After completion of Phase II training, each student must take a final examination at the local level and pass with a score of 80 or above before being registered to participate in the state Phase II testing.
Because records and reports submitted to government require frequent updating, Phase III, the final phase of the Manager Training Program is administered by the Louisiana Department of Education. After completion of Phase III training, the students must participate in and pass a state Phase III examination with a score of 75 or above. Upon successful completion of Phase I, Phase II and Phase III, students are issued certificates and manager certification cards. The newly trained managers are then assigned to schools as needed.
