All East Baton Rouge Parish School System Students Continue to be Eligible for Free Meals for the 2015-16 School Year

Press Release Aug. 1 2015

Baton Rouge, LA – All East Baton Rouge Parish School System students serviced by the Child Nutrition Program are eligible for one breakfast and lunch at no cost for the 2015-16 school year. Additionally, students who choose to bring their own lunches to school can obtain free milk if they pick up a fruit and one other item, such as a veggie, bread or entree offered each day.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture program for meals started last year, permits students to receive meals at no charge, similar to how they are allocated textbooks and bus transportation at no cost.

“We are excited to continue the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) that offers free nutritious meals to all students regardless of economic need,” said Dr. Nadine Mann, director of the district’s Child Nutrition Department. “This program allows us to focus on what is important in terms of ensuring all of our students eat fresh healthy meals, instead of concerning ourselves with who is required to pay for the food.”

Parents can send money to pay for a second meal or for extra food items, such as bottled water, milk, juice or an entrée if they want to purchase the items. Money can be added to the student’s account by sending it to the cafeteria manager or by paying online at www.myschoolbucks.com.

For the 2014-15 school year, the district’s Child Nutrition Program will continue to operate the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program in select schools, along with the Supper Program at schools that have after school tutorial programs. Breakfast in Classroom is also offered at some schools and provides a way for students to eat to eat breakfast with their peers as they get ready to start the day in the classroom.
