East Baton Rouge Parish School System Receives $50,000 Fast Forward Planning Grant

Press Release Mar. 10 2021

Today, the Louisiana Department of Education awarded a $50,000 Fast Forward planning grant to the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. The grant will be used to increase the number of students graduating high school with an associate’s degree.

“We are excited to be able to serve as the regional leader to expand workforce development course offerings, join forces with higher education partners, and ensure that all students are truly college and career ready,” said Dr. Sito Narcisse, EBRPSS Superintendent of Schools. “This grant will support the community’s priorities moving into the strategic planning process.”

The pathways that EBRPSS and the Capital Region’s 10-parish Labor Market Area will pursue are supply chain logistics, information technology, manufacturing, and construction crafts. EBR’s Career and Technical Education team, along with EBR CTEC, seek to use this grant to expand EBR’s existing Early College Academy and facilitate more apprenticeship opportunities while still in high school.

The Capital Region is being advised by multiple business partners and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber to identify the high-wage, high-demand career opportunities for students here at home.

“This grant gives the Capital Region, with leadership from EBR Schools, a chance to dramatically increase workforce preparedness,” said Liz Smith, Senior Vice President for Economic Competitiveness at the Baton Rouge Area Chamber. “A few years from now, the Capital Region will be a place where every student that wants to can graduate high school with a diploma, a degree, and a pathway into a job. That’s a powerful opportunity we can’t afford to miss.”
