EBRPSS Announces Covid-19 Guidelines for 2021-2022 School Year

Communications Aug. 3 2021

In an effort to safely reopen schools for students and staff, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System is announcing additional guidance and safety measures for the 2021- 2022 school year. The guidance was created based upon the recommendations of the Health Advisory Committee, comprising of the state’s leading health experts in epidemiology, infectious disease and public health.

“We have followed the data, science and experts. Based upon the recommendations of our Health Advisory Committee, we are confident that we can continue to provide an excellent education for our students and a safe teaching environment for our staff. We know that the majority of our students and families are eager to return to a sense of normalcy, and we are confident that the following guidance allows them to do so safely,” said Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse.

Much of the guidance from the 2020-2021 school year will remain in place, with the addition of some heightened mitigation and prevention methods. All students in kindergarten to12th grade will be required to wear a mask in the school setting, and all children and staff will be required to wear masks when traveling on school busses. Additionally, EBRPSS will begin to offer free, periodic COVID-19 testing to staff and students, with parental consent.

“We firmly believe that the guidance and recommendations that we have made as a committee will keep children, staff and families safe through in-person learning this school year with the addition of new mitigation efforts. The biggest difference this school year is that we have an effective vaccine against COVID-19.  We continue to encourage those who are eligible to receive a vaccine,” stated Stacey Dupre, chief officer for student support.

The full guidance document can be found at https://ebrschools.org/safe-reopening-plan/ . As conditions change and community infection and vaccination rates fluctuate, we will continue to update this guidance and provide additional information on our website.
