FLU VACCINATIONS FOR STUDENTS OFFERED THROUGHOUT EBRPSS

Baton Rouge, LA – Today, November 12, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) and its health partner, Health Centers in Schools, announced at Claiborne Elementary School, the kick-off of the System’s influenza vaccinations program for all its school-age children The flu immunizations are being provided to all EBRPSS students who have a completed consent form signed by a parent or guardian. Those involved hope this effort will allow vaccination of close to 40 percent of the total student population.

According to a schedule, the immunizations will be administered to students at System schools from November 12 until the winter break. If all schools aren’t reached, schools will be scheduled in January along with make-up days. Children between 2 and 17 years of age are twice as likely to get the flu as adults, and they are also a main source for spreading the flu. Each year, an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of flu complications. According to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting an annual flu vaccine is the best defense against the influenza virus.

Vaccination clinics are planned for all school campuses served by Health Centers in Schools staff, using both the nasal spray vaccine as well as the traditional injection. Information packets and consent forms are sent to students’ parents or guardians prior to the immunizations. Health Center medical staff and nursing students from Southeastern Louisiana University Nursing School, Our Lady of the Lake College, Delta College, Baton Rouge Community College and Southern University will administer the immunization, and a medical staffer will remain on site during the entire school day.

The cost of immunizations for students who do not qualify for the Medicaid Vaccines for Children program will be covered through a generous donation by the Our Lady of the Lake Foundation.

Health Centers in Schools, a part of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital is Louisiana’s largest and most successful student health service delivery model. Health Centers in Schools is the only organization nationwide to integrate school-based health centers and school nursing programs. The program serves over 42,000 students grades Pre-K to 12 on over 90 school campuses annually in the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System. The program operates medical clinics in schools, bringing preventive care in the form of wellness checkups, asthma management and flu vaccinations offered free of charge. .
