Press Release Jan. 30 2020
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” The upcoming commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 20th is an opportunity to honor his legacy and commit ourselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another.
The Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System is a tax-exempt public charity and grant-making organization that provides vital support to area students, teachers and school administrators by building effective partnerships and funding high-impact projects for which tax dollars are not available.
Its mission is to enhance education, champion innovation and provide sustained financial support to public schools within the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.
State and local funding per student in Louisiana trails the national average by more than $1,000 per child*, a deficit that reduces opportunities for learning and leads to an overall diminishment of community resources and economic vitality for our region. Unfortunately, the most basic needs of parish public schools continue to exceed the capacity of traditional funding sources.
This year’s MLK project targeted the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) to promote healthy lifestyles among students.
Students attend school daily to receive instruction while facing many challenges stemming from home life conditions that may lack the resources many of us take for granted. Our children often lack items needed to address simple hygiene and/or personal daily health needs. Youth hygiene and personal care are ongoing life management skills EBR public schools stress to all students, but current funding does not cover these necessities.
The Managing Life Kits (MLK) assembled and donated by Oshner will provide a resource for administrators and school staff to assist students with daily self-care and personal hygiene challenges. Having a MLK on-site will allow challenges to be dealt with quickly at school – thus reducing the need for parents to leave work or for students to miss school simply to address these needs. They will return to the learning environment feeling safe, healthy, comfortable, and confident.
“Since Christy is a founding member of the Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System,” board president Stephen Loy said, “we are all the more grateful she is utilizing our nonprofit organization. The generous donations of Ochsner employees will be put directly into the schools, and begin positively impacting our children immediately.”
