Summer Meals Kickoff Hosted at McKinley Middle by Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA)

Jun. 5 2017

The Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA) hosted a Summer Meals Kickoff event in East Baton Rouge Parish on June 5 at McKinley Middle.

The purpose of the Summer Feeding program is to ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. “Child hunger and the need for good nutrition does not stop when on the last day of school, but continues throughout the summer.  The Summer Meals program transitions kids from one school year to the next with nutritious meals provided to them during the summer months, ” – explained Dr. Nadine Mann, Administrative Director of the EBR Child Nutrition Program.

Over 230,000 meals were provided to the youth of EBR through the Summer Feeding program in 2016 alone. This year they expect to have 84 sites.  Some of those will be in a traditional school setting while others will be in partnership with BREC and Baton Rouge Public Library System.

EBR Parish has been considered a Community Eligibility Provision Parish since August 2014. Community Eligibility Provision is an innovative program that makes it easier for high need schools to serve free meals-both breakfast and lunch to all students by removing the need for applications. EBR Child Nutrition has been proactive in providing alternative meals and snacks to permit for a greater percentage of children to receive the proper nutrition they need.  The parish has implemented breakfast on-the-go at many schools which allows for a more efficient way to feed more children.  The Summer Meals program has been part of the parish for over 40 years.  In 2016 EBR received a grant from SUDIA to help with food service transportation equipment as their number of sites grew to 81 sites.  The Southeast United Dairy Industry Association is committed to promoting child nutrition programs throughout Louisiana.  To make this kickoff a special event a Saints Pep Rally will be held including the fan-favorite Saints Mascot, Gumbo.  “The purpose of this event to celebrate the role that the East Baton Rouge Child Nutrition staff play in getting meals to kids during the summer and to help spread the word of the great Summer Meals program they have,” said Jennifer Duhon, SUDIA.
