Through a very competitive process, our district selection committees have chosen the 2018 EBR Students of the Year. The Student of the Year District Winners are Erina Buchholz from Baton Rouge Magnet High School, Maddy Kay Manning-Bi from Woodlawn Middle School, and Aiswarya Nair from Wildwood Elementary.
Erina Bucholz is the President of the National Honor Society at BRMHS, she is the youngest member in history to join the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, and in her spare time Erina volunteers in the community and teaches violin.
Maddy Kay Manning-Bi is the Junior Beta President at Woodlawn Middle, was a Senator for Youth Legislature in 2016, and in 2017 Maddy played the lead role in “Wonka Junior.”
Aiswarya Nair was born in India before immigrating to the United States with her family. She is on the ‘A’ Honor Roll with perfect school attendance. Aiswarya also has her Black Belt in Taekwondo.
The Student of the Year awards program, to be held February 8th, will recognize these outstanding students at the elementary, middle and high school level. Each school in the school system was encouraged to participate in the prestigious program and send in a student portfolio that provides evidence of the Student of the Year accomplishments.
A committee of educators and community members then reviewed the portfolios and selected the top applicants at each level that exhibited exemplary performance.
“These students have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability, and citizenship,” said Associate Superintendent Ben Necaise.
The three chosen students will now move forward to the regional level competition where they will be interviewed and given the opportunity to complete a writing sample. If the students progress from the regional competition they will move on to the state level, which is sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education.
The Student of the Year Reception will be hosted at McKinley Middle Magnet School on Thursday, February 8th at 4:30 pm.
“We look forward to celebrating and recognizing all school level and district winners on that night,” said Ben Necaise.
