Leslie Marks Brown serves as superintendent of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, the second-largest district in Louisiana, serving over 40,000 students, 80 schools, and 5,000 full-time employees. She assumed the school system’s top role in August 2020. A proven leader with a profound commitment to equity of opportunity, Brown has demonstrated her capacity to bring together teams, families, and community to make real improvements for all students.
Prior to assuming the role of superintendent in East Baton Rouge, Brown served 10 years in cabinet-level leadership at Broward County Public Schools in Florida as Chief Portfolio Services Officer. As Chief Portfolio Officer, Brown supported the instructional, operational, and financial aspects of a school system with 270,000 students and a budget of $4 billion. Brown designed and led processes including facilities management, real estate, municipal and community program partnerships, educational program design, school choice, innovative programs, magnet programs, demographics and enrollment planning, student athletics/activities, and charter school support services.
Over Brown’s decade of leadership at Broward County Public Schools, the school system significantly increased the number of “A” schools and boosted the high school graduation rate to 95 percent. Under Brown’s leadership, the school system also expanded its STEM and arts integration programming.
Brown began her educational career as a teacher in Leon County in Florida in 1979. She went on to serve in many leadership capacities, including as a principal and an executive director of education programs.
Brown is a member of Chiefs for Change’s second Future Chiefs cohort. She is a Florida State University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in art education and studio art, as well as two master’s degrees in art education and educational leadership.
Brown firmly believes “family comes first”—in education and in her own life. She is a dedicated wife and proud mother of three children.
