The House Party has begun at Capitol Elementary.
The school at 4141 Gus Young Ave. officially launched its House System with a selection celebration on Aug. 28.
Inspired by the innovative school culture and House System made famous by the Ron Clark Academy of Atlanta, Capitol’s House System is designed to build school pride, leadership, teamwork, positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging among students and staff.
“It’s a positive way to reinforce things we’re doing around our school, such as attendance, behavior and academics,” said Capitol Principal Karla Johnson. “We’re just excited that our students are learning how to praise each other.”
Throughout the school year, students and staff will compete in house challenges, earning points for academics, demonstrating positive behaviors and a variety of other activities.
Capitol’s four houses are:
- Altruismo — black — representing givers.
- Amistad — red — representing friendship.
- Isibindi — green — representing courage.
- Reveur — blue — representing dreams.
Capitol’s 400 students learned their house assignments during the event that featured house colors, music, cheers, refreshments and friendly competition.
Johnson is part of the Blue House.
“We’re trying to show our students what it means to be positive at all given times, to celebrate and lift each other up, no matter which house you’re a part of,” Johnson said. “Even in life, no matter who’s different, we still want to uplift each (other) and work together to make a calm and happy place, a place of peace.”
District leaders also participated, making a commitment to Capitol through a ceremonial signing, pledging to champion, encourage and support the school’s students and school community throughout the year.
