Blue shirts replaced the purples on Friday, as Mayfair Laboratory School celebrated its recent selection as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School. “We’re here because you guys, your teachers, all of y’all, won the biggest award that the U.S. government can give. We are a Blue Ribbon,” Principal Kyle Fontenette said in an auditorium packed with cheering students (all with their new Blue Ribbon shirts), teachers, staff, EBR Schools leaders, board members and other dignitaries.
Superintendent LaMont Cole said the school’s achievement took a “total team effort” from teachers, the support team, staff, cafeteria workers and custodians. “This is not an award that we all should take lightly. We should be proud of you, we should celebrate you, but most of all, we should support you all so that you can do it again and again and again,” Cole said. Mayor Sharon Weston Broome presented Fontenette and Mayfair with an outstanding certificate of commendation from the city. Fontenette and music teacher Katie Choi will represent Mayfair at a national recognition ceremony in November in Washington, D.C. Choi has won Mayfair Lab’s Teacher of the Year and is the Elementary Fine Arts Teacher of the Year.
