Anthony Parker has encountered nearly every question imaginable about his blindness. How long has he been blind? What does it feel like? Does he drive? On Tuesday, Parker fielded those questions and more during a presentation with students at The Dufrocq School, where he works as a paraprofessional. The event was part of World Braille Day, which was celebrated Jan. 4. The day raises awareness of the importance of the braille writing systems in communication. Parker, who has been blind since age 3, encouraged students to treat everyone with respect and kindness, regardless of any disabilities.
“Blind people or individuals who are impaired in any way are just like everybody else,” said Parker, 56, a graduate of LSU with a degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. Parker also provided students with tips on reading braille and highlighted assistive devices and techniques he utilizes in his daily life.

As part of its ongoing commitment to giving back to the community, the
EBR Schools Division of Human Resources participated in a Day of Service at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
As contributors to the Food Bank`s "Sort and Repack" initiative, HR team members dedicated their time to sorting, categorizing, and packaging donated nonperishable food items. The initiative aligns with the HR team`s values of supporting local organizations and fostering a spirit of service within our school district.
The HR team looks forward to continue working with local organizations and engaging in community service projects throughout the year.

The second RIASEC Day of the school year offered Twin Oaks Elementary School students an opportunity to again explore various career paths and engage with professionals. RIASEC stands for the six themes that describe a person`s interests and match them with careers: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

High school students in Kierra Crawford`s EMT program at the EBR Career and Technical Education Center received valuable hands-on training on performing clinical rotations/rides with East Baton Rouge Parish Emergency Medical Services as part of their curriculum. In addition to training on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the session contained a question-and-answer session with Crawford, Terra Eubanks, of Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet, and Dan C. Godbee, of EMS.
