The state of Louisiana is currently ranked 49th in the nation in reading proficiency and according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2020), workers who did not graduate high school have the lowest median weekly earnings ($592), which is 3 times less than people with the highest education levels.
Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broom and EBR Schools’ superintendent, Dr. Sito Narcisse is taking this quite seriously and formed a joint task force to proactively improve literacy for all and help to build a stronger community. The EBR Literacy Blueprint developed by the task force will be officially unveiled tomorrow, June 21, 2022, at 9:00 am at the Goodwood Library.
The blueprint combines the best national research and practices for improving literacy with our local context with the goal of making Baton Rouge the literacy capital of Louisiana, improving the lives of our citizens, and ultimately serving as a model for the state and nation.
The media is invited to attend the press conference to learn more about the joint task force and the Literacy Blueprint. Chief of Literacy, Dr. Barbara Lashley, Dr. Narcisse, along with representatives from the joint task force will be speaking and answering questions.
