Baton Rouge educator Emmitt Glynn honored as La. History Teacher of the Year

One step into any one of Emmitt Glynn III’s classes at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, and it’s easy to see why he’s regarded as a distinguished educator.

On Dec. 19 in the school’s library, Glynn was honored at a reception for his selection as the 2024 Louisiana History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

The prestigious award was established in 2004. It recognizes exceptional elementary through high school teachers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools and U.S. territories for their outstanding contributions to American history education.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to K–12 American history education.

Glynn, along with 52 other finalists, will receive a $1,000 honorarium, as well as a core archive of American history books and educational materials curated by the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

Glynn teaches AP African-American studies and AP U.S. government and politics at Baton Rouge High. He is a nationally board-certified teacher in social studies/history with 30 years of teaching experience. He is a native of Baton Rouge and is a graduate of Southern University and earned a master’s in history from Southeastern Louisiana University.

Congratulations, Mr. Glynn.
