ESL Family Literacy Night & Cultural Connections

Work Ready U Workforce Development Community Education and EBR Adult Education and Learning Center Celebrate Family Literacy Night and National Hispanic Heritage with the theme, Family Empowerment and Community Involvement through Cultural Connections and Intergenerational Learning.”

Family literacy fosters lifelong learning by connecting cultural traditions and shared experiences, strengthening family bonds, and empowering individuals to meet future challenges through literacy-rich environments and intergenerational support. This concept emphasizes the interconnected nature of family literacy, highlighting how engaging in reading, writing, and language together builds critical skills while also nurturing familial relationships and cultural understanding. 

This activity will be held during the week of September 22-25, 2025 at Christa McAuliffe Library. Monday-Tuesday Classes will be held or September 22, 2025 and Wednesday-Thursday Classes will be held on September 25, 2025 specifically. This will be participated in by ESL students who have Pre-5th students or children.

The activity aims to meet the LCTCS’s required school activities aligned to the state’s goals for the ESL program and to increase our number served. The spouse (not registered as ESL student) will fill out a short registration form and submit it to their respective ESL teacher.

Students who don’t have children will stay in their respective classes. This week’s lessons and learning activities will be tailored to the celebrations.

Cultural Connection: 

Family literacy grounds itself in the enduring, cultural tools and practices that families use to pass on knowledge and values. 

Intergenerational Learning: 

Parents, children, and even grandparents learn together, creating a dynamic environment where everyone develops and strengthens their skills. 

Empowerment: 

By providing resources and support, family literacy helps families overcome challenges and build a pathway to success in other academic and life areas. 

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Interactive Storytelling: 

            Participate in a “Fairy Tale Story Shuffle” or a “Fantasy Fill-In” to create new stories together. 

Reading Games: 

Host a literacy-themed board game night, set up an escape room, or create an obstacle course with reading challenges. 

Food and Games:

Make a snack together by following procedural text (a recipe), which also connects reading      to a tangible outcome. 

Bingo Cards-Consonant Blends:

Phonics and Phonemic Awareness –Consonant Blends Words Flashcards and Memory Game. Consonant blends are combinations of consonants that occur before or after a vowel such as the CR in crab or the ST in last. The cards can be used for reviewing initial consonant blends formed by adding an R or an L etc.

Royal Pattern Maker:

Art and writing activity. The family will use cardboard crowns or “printables” with sentence strips about activities that the family can do together at home to strengthen love, respect, and foster a learning environment for the children. ( Materials include markers, crayons, or color sticks, adhesive foam shapes or shape stickers.

Math Interactive Games via Nearpod:

Interactive games to strengthen numeracy.

Family Photo Booth: 

Set up a themed backdrop and props for families to capture memories of their night together.

Children and adults move from one engaging station to the next, discovering the power of words, characters, and creativity.

That’s the joy of a Family Literacy Night – a fun and educational experience designed to inspire a love of reading, build literacy and numeracy skills, and bring families together through the shared wonder of storytelling, reading, math interactive games, and Arts.
