Congratulations to senior Daviyah Anthony, of Scotlandville Magnet High School, for her selection as a 2025 Gates Scholar!
The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective program established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for outstanding minority students from low-income backgrounds. The scholarship will allow Daviyah to attend college for free. She`ll join an exclusive network of Gates Scholars receiving ongoing personal and professional enrichment, mentorship and additional support throughout college and into her career.
This year, 750 Scholars were selected from over 48,000 applicants nationwide, an acceptance rate of less than 1.6%. Daviyah`s achievement reflects her exceptional hard work and determination. Her accomplishment marks the second consecutive year and sixth time overall that a Baton Rouge Youth Coalition Fellow has achieved this honor.

It`s Earth Day! River, a passionate 2nd grader from Westdale Heights Academic Magnet, was recently awarded a $1,000 grant to help fund his idea to visit schools to teach other children about litter. Now, he`s on a mission to get even more young people involved—partnering with schools, raising awareness, and reading to kids about how littering harms our planet. With heart and action, River is proving that anyone can protect the Earth—no Planeteer Rings required!
